Chinese Lantern

As we usher in the Year of the Rabbit, it's time to Doodle some lunar lanterns to help light up our way! This project is a bit challenging but is a great challenge for at-home or classroom learning. If you want to learn more about Lunar New Year please check out our blog!

1 Assemble your materials!

Gather together your 3D pen, plastic filament, keychain attachments, DoodlePad, and download and print out our free stencil.

2 Trace The Stencil

There are three different shapes of lanterns to pick from. Select the one you want to tackle and trace parts A, B, and C. Pay attention to the quantity of each part that is required.

3 Assemble the Lantern

Once you have all the pieces Doodled, it's time to assemble. Using part B and a base attach the C parts equally around the base (part B). Once you have a good base structure formed you can fill in the remaining open areas to create a solid lantern shape.

4 Attach the top & bottoms

Using the A part(s) from the stencil, create miniature lantern (cylinder) shapes and attach them to the top and bottom of the larger lantern. This will help give your lantern a more traditional look and feel.

5 Make it a Keychain!

Using the keychain illustration on the stencil, Doodle 1-2 pieces of it and attach one to the top of the lantern to create a complete, closed loop. Then replicate those steps, but attach the other piece to the keychain accessory. Then connect the two parts to finalize the keychain as we show here in this GIF.

6 Add the Hanging Tassels

Finally, each lanter has a gold tassel that should hang off the bottom. You can Doodle the tassel using freehand, just follow along with this GIF for a visual. Securely attach it to the bottom of your lantern using some additional filament. With that, you now have a festive Lunar New Year lantern to hang from your keys, or gift to someone special!
