Bring the Beach to Life

Have you ever taken a long walk on the beach and collected a bucket full of beautiful seashells to take home with you? Shells are a really fun material to use for crafting -- if you can find them. But if you’re not planning a trip to the beach right now, don’t worry! In this tutorial, we’ll show you how to doodle your own seashells with your 3D pen and plastics. Also, check out the blog post as we cover more fun shell activities. When you’re finished with your project, share it @3Doodler #3Doodler #WhatWillYouCreate.

1 Collect your materials.

Start by printing out the free stencil we’ve created of a shell. An oyster is a type of animal called a mollusk that is able to grow its own shell using a muscle called the mantle. As you create YOUR own shell you’ll need your 3Doodler pen and plastics, as well as your 3Doodler DoodlePad.

2 Build your shell.

Just like mollusks, we’re going to build our shells from the bottom up. Start by placing the shell stencil under your DoodlePad. Using your 3D pen, trace the shell using your favorite plastics. This is a great opportunity to get creative with color.

3 Embellish your shell.

Once the outline of the shell has hardened, peel it gently from your DoodlePad and Doodle between the lines to create a solid shell surface. You can use one color, or many . . . the world is your oyster!

4 Doodle a pearl.

While not all shells hide beautiful pearls, oyster shells DO! Don’t forget to Doodle a round pearl to place in your shell. Or if you are feeling especially adventurous you can Doodle other small treasures to include in your shell, instead. Check out our stencil library if you’re looking for some inspiration.

5 Display your designs.

Once you are happy with your shells, it’s time to “come out of your shell” and show them to the world. Display them at home, create a seashell scavenger hunt, or check out our blog postfor fun craft ideas you can work on today.
