Fun with Rocks

Geodes! This rock formation is caused when sedimentary and volcanic rocks are slowly filled with minerals deposited by hydrothermal fluids and are left to cool. These rocks are found primarily in desert conditions. In this challenge, we'll explore how to recreate these fascinating rocks using your 3Doodler 3D pen.

What You'll Need

1 Assemble your materials!

Gather together your 3Doodler pen, plastic, and stencil.

2 Trace the Stencil and then make it 3D!

Use the stencil to trace the outside outline of the rock shape. Once traced then take a tissue and fold it to fit inside the shape. Then carefully start doodling over the tissue creating a 3D rock shell / perimeter.

3 Doodle the Crystle

Once you've created the outside rock shell, it's time to start working on the crystals found inside the geode. For this, you will want to select a crystal color, in our example blue, and line the inside of your rock with this color. This should create the effect that your Doodle is made up of layers just like real geodes. Once the entire inside of the rock is covered, you can add a third color to add extra color and depth.

4 Add Some Finishing Details

You are nearly done! All that's left is some finishing details. Using white plastic, add a layer around the outside of the geode as seen here. This will make your geode look real and add an aged look to your fake rock.
